Daily dairy consumption does not improve bone density

Data from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) in the USA indicates that the daily consumption of dairy during menopause does not improve bone density or reduce the risk of fractures in menopausal women. Previous studies had suggested that there was a “potential premenopausal critical window” for calcium supplement effectiveness, however new studies suggest that dairy intake in women 45-55 years of age does not affect the rate of bone loss or fractures. According to SWAN, “two of the greatest risk factors for osteoporosis – age and sex – are beyond a woman’s control”.

The researchers suggest that eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein and practicing regular weight-bearing exercise, such as walking or jogging has greater potential to help women avoid fractures.
