Our story
Back in January 2018, Affi, our founder, was busy launching her shame-busting organic period care range, Freda, when irregular bleeding led her to visit her GP. Based on her age, the GP assumed that Affi’s symptoms were a sign of perimenopause. Thankfully, her husband, who is a gynaecologist, suspected there might be something more serious going on. Further tests revealed a large cancerous tumour in her bladder. Nine months of intensive treatment, including an operation, chemotherapy and radio therapy, forced Affi to step back from day to day running of her company. During this time, she began to question how a qualified medical professional like her GP could misdiagnose bladder cancer as menopause? She recognised that the menopause was one more taboo areas of women’s health, and that she had not been armed with the information she needed in order to help herself. So she decided to develop Modern Menopause: To provide women with a reliable platform from which to learn vital information about this phase of their lives, to ultimately allow them to track and understand how their treatment, diet and exercise can affect their symptoms and their mood.
