Vasomotor Symptoms of Menopause

Vasomotor symptoms of menopause are related to changes in the blood vessels triggered by hormonal fluctuations. Most women experience menopause between the ages of 45-58 years, though some symptoms may occur during perimenopause, i.e. while still menstruating. It is important to note that not all women experience these symptoms, and that some of them can be indicative of other medical conditions.

Common vasomotor symptoms include:

-Hot flashes

-Night sweats and general sweating

-Sleep disturbance

-Anxiety

-Palpitations

The most common symptom – hot flashes - are caused by changes in the part of the brain that regulates body temperature due to reduced estrogen hormone levels.

Symptoms may be triggered by lifestyle and dietary habits, such as smoking, eating spicy food, stress, and obesity. However, symptoms can also be caused by medical conditions such as an overactive thyroid or for other unexplained reasons. You should speak to a doctor if your vasomotor symptoms are accompanied by other conditions such as diarrhea, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. Your doctor may prescribe hormone therapy or antidepressants to help you manage your symptoms. Alternative treatments include supplements such as Black Cohosh and practical remedies including: avoiding known triggers (e.g. alcohol, caffeine, and spicy food), quitting smoking, carrying a water bottle or a portable fan with you, wearing light clothing to bed and sleeping in a cool room, breathing exercises, and following a healthy diet and exercise regime.
