Why do women gain weight during menopause and what you can do about it

Weight gain is one of many symptoms of menopause that are caused by hormonal changes. Certain areas in the body become more prone to weight gain due to changes in fat distributism. However, weight gain is not exclusively due to the menopause, it is also related to natural aging.  As we age our muscle mass decreases and this leads to the body burning fewer calories at rest.  Maintaining old dietary habits and decreased levels of activity due to new aches and pains also contribute to weight gain.

The weight gain associated with aging in combination with the hormonal changes caused by menopause can exacerbate other health conditions such as osteoporosis, and can increase your chances of heart attack or stroke.

However, weight gain during menopause is not inevitable. Here are some suggestions to help you maintain a healthy weight:

1.    Incorporate regular daily exercise of various intensities to your schedule.

2.    Monitor your weight– but only weight yourself once a week – doing so daily may fuel an unhealthy fixation.

3.    Create positive habits that will distract you from comfort eating – such as going for a walk or learning a new hobby.

4.    Eat more slowly and mindfully - studies have shown that eating slower reduces the quantity of food consumed.

5.    Switch off from technology and ensure you sleep well and night.

6.    Naturally curb sugar cravings by reaching for mood boosting foods like fruits, nuts, and nut butters.
